On Watch, Alert Alpaca

On Watch, Alert Alpaca

Alpacas are known as
quiet and friendly animals...
providing us soft alpaca fiber.

Many breeders of both sheep & goats
(and chickens too!)
use alpacas as guard animal
protectors for their flocks.

Alpacas are often 'On Watch'
while the other animals graze.
Alpacas guard against foxes,
and many other predators,
which is most important during
lambing & kidding season
when the farms are abundant
with newborn lambs and kids.

Alpaca Beauty

Alpaca Beauty

Alpacas, compared to the many
other animals in the world,
are undoubtedly intelligent.
Also being friendly, quiet, and herd social,
they're great creatures to get to know!

While mingling amongst them
I've decided that each alpaca,
much like individual people,
has its own personality
and lovable beauty.

A Hug Please, Wooly Sheep

A Hug Please, Wooly Sheep

Sheep with their docile
and friendly nature are
interesting social animals.

I've found them to have
a lot more personality than
many people would imagine.

It doesn't matter if you're
with them in the farmyard or barn.
A curious sheep, like this one,
will come close, look at you,
and then cause you to wonder
what the sheep would like to say.
So... you simply 'give it a hug of love'
(works for people too!)

These two alpacas
were standing together
and looking like they were
sharing some juicy gossip.
Of course they were
just chewing their cud.

Those of you that have followed me
and my paintings over the years
know of my fondness
for wooly farmyard animals.
Although I more often paint sheep,
I also enjoy alpaca for their
gentleness, beauty, intelligence,
and individual personalities.

This alpaca is attentively
Looking for My Friends,
keeping an awareness as to the
whereabouts of its family group.

Alpacas enjoy the company of
other alpacas. As herd animals
they develop social relationships
among each other.

At a recent alpaca show,
as individual alpaca were separated from
their family group for judging,
we could see and hear their caring concern
that they express for each other
when one alpaca departs
or returns to the family group.

When we all think about sheep,
see a flock of sheep, or mention sheep
we also think of their wool
which has been used for its warmth
throughout history in many countries.

The Warm Light of this setting,
along with this huggable Wooly Sheep,
complement each other delightfully
in both function and beauty.

A bouquet of perennial flowers give this
vintage blue and white pitcher a new purpose.
They are charming together!

The magenta flowers add a pop of color.
A pretty stem in full bloom,
while awaiting placement in the bouquet,
brings an added touch of interest to the painting.

Little lambs are just too cute!
On one of our farm outings
these two lambs seemed to enjoy a snuggle.
They just wanted to be near each other
playing as friends in the barnyard.

Pears have such beauty in shape and color.
They are interesting to paint with their
curves, bumps, and many variations
of color and form.

The lighting enabled me to give this painting
harmonious hues in shadows and lights.
The light reflected varied yellow colors from
the pear onto the cloth and also into the background.
A little of the leaf's hues are seen in the cloth.

Spending time with, and painting, sheep
has been a fondness of mine for many years.
Sheep and alpaca bond nicely together and
farmers are utilizing alpaca to protect
their flocks of sheep and lambs.

More recently I've had a great opportunity to
learn about, get close to, and enjoy alpacas.

Different from the Huacaya alpaca fleece,
the Suri alpaca have long flowing locks.

Alpacas seem to be far more skittish than
the docile farmyard sheep that I'm accustomed to.
With its beach waves hair style
this alpaca and I got along 'nosey-nosey' fine.

I was spending time with some wooly farmyard friends
when I noticed a momma ewe headed
away from the barn and out into the pasture.
Her lamb was staying close by her as
she looked for just the right spot to graze.
Momma with her precious lamb,
side-by-side together,
as if posing for my painting.
