Several years ago an old neighbor and I
redid the area between my house and his garage.
I was just going to make a stone path and
asked him if that would be ok. One thing
led to another and a beautiful garden
was the end product. Of course it didn't hurt
that he was, and still is, one of the countries
best landscape architects. One of the wonderful
items he planted was a graphed lilac tree.
It looks like a topiary tree, reaching to the
second story...
The blooms are much smaller than a
regular lilac bush, very delicate and lacy.
The stone path leads to this "secret garden"
area and around the lilac. This year the tree was
in great form with an abundant crop of flowers.
It's just outside our bedroom windows.
My husband left the window open
as much as possible. The fragrance wrapped
itself throughout the house.

Couldn't resist the spring flowers again.
Parrot Tulips that haven't bloomed for years, a nice treat to paint. This is a loose study, with expressive brush stokes, done alla prima. (all at once)
I'm pleased with how it turned out.
It looks detailed from a distance, but lots of
brush stokes up close.

Lilacs

More Spring!
These lilacs have been sitting on the dining room table
for a few days. Couldn't resist! This was painted Alla Prima...
meaning, all at once. Instead of painting an 'under painting'
in gray tones and values, this was painted from start to finish
at one sitting. Starting with an under painting of sorts, blocking in
large areas of values with local colors. Darks and background
first, building the shapes and values in large areas working
to the lights and details.

In my opinion, the best way to painting a subject that will fade
quickly. If I did a value study in grays, the flowers would be
wilted by the time it was ready to apply the glazes.

Exciting news...Last week I was presented with signature
status in one of the art groups I belong to.
I now have that status in two groups,
The Women's of League of Akron
and The Akron Society of Artist.
With much fan fair and congrats last Wed. I was
granted a certificate and a pin for the ASA group.

It's an honor to be considered by your peers
to be accomplished enough and be granted this status.
For those of you not accustomed to art and it's lingo,
one has to be reviewed in critiques over a long period of time.
Each month our group has such a "critique".
We all bring one or two pieces to be reviewed and the
membership committee takes notes and keeps records of
the paintings we bring. The peers include many professional
artists of national recognition. Thus the feeling of honor!

Creamer and Daffodils

Spring time beauties bursting with color.
Thought these looked so pretty in the
Antique Reflections pitcher.
They are almost overpowering though.
The tall flowers are set off by the extra long
linen canvas. It makes for an elegant looking
painting. Yellow light is bouncing all around.

Daffodil

Daffodil

This painting was done with an under painting of values.
I painted the whole painting in grays and then added the color
with several layers of glazes. I use glazes a lot normally,
but as I paint or on top of other colors. Doing an entire
under painting is a very old and time tested way of painting.
Many of the old masters painted this way. It does produce a
nice luminous quality.

First Blush & Brie

Many different surfaces to capture...porcelain, glass,
glossy painted surface, and cork and crackers. This was a
challenge, but I hope you think it turned out well.
I did this one a couple of weeks ago and had to look at it
a while. After a few glazes and more reflections I am happy.
I'm especially happy with the antique glass and the reflections.

I'm pretty happy with they way this painting turned out.
I like the way the shadows work in the design.
I bought this lovely little bone dish on ebay to paint.
So glad I did. The only thing, I was surprised at how small it was.
I guess I should have figured a bone dish wouldn't be very big.

Little Chickadee

Little Chickadee

Another pastel painting that I hope you will enjoy.
This little chickadee landed on our back porch.
He was busy making a nest in a bird house sitting there.
That was until the neighborhood cat was snooping around.

The painting will come with the same frame as the strawberries...
the pastel from yesterday. Just haven't put this one in the frame
as of yet.

Strawberries

Nicely framed with glass to protect the pastel painting.

This is something a bit different today. An original pastel painting...
and yes, a pastel is considered a painting.

Pastels can last as long as an oil if they are properly treated.
They should not be in direct sunlight or harsh lighting of any kind.
That should be the rule for all fine art, oils, watercolors,
drawings, and fine prints.
There are many pastels in museums that look as fresh as any oil.
Degas, just to name one artist.

Anyway, I only had a short time to paint today and thought I
would do a pastel. Now I'm covered with pastel dust instead of oil paint.
An under-painting still had to be established.
Then a build up from darks to lights. So much for quick.

Hope to have more pastels in the future. I really do like the feel
of the pastels and the color range.
