Wanting A Hug, Wooly Sheep

Wanting A Hug, Wooly Sheep
8” x 10” original oil painting
gallery wrapped stretched canvas

Available in my online store

I've created this painting with an unfinished look
to give the viewer the impression that
the sheep is coming out of the canvas

My fondness of sheep is well known
by those of you that follow my paintings.
Most sheep that I've encountered are
docile, curious, and huggable.
When mingling amongst sheep
in the farmyard or barn,
and as much as you want to hug them,
there are times when a friendly sheep
obviously wants a hug from you.

the peony and all things nearby.
The silvery reflections also create
subtle hues and colorful shadows
which interact with each other.

This lovely Johnson Bros. creamer
is the fitting host for some
yarrow clippings from my garden.
Together they enabled me to portray
a study of contrasts:
soft yarrow blossoms and soft feathery leaves
contrasted with a hard porcelain creamer,
intense dramatic lights
contrasted against mysterious darks,
and colorful fuzzy shadows
contrasted against sharp crisp shadows.

Although each flower bloom of the daylily
lasts only one day, each blossom
presents itself as pure beauty for that limited time.

Being perennials, my garden lilies
faithfully come-up each year with
their multiple budded stems bringing
many days of vibrant color to my garden.

For the composition of this painting
I've selected a lovely blooming stem with buds
and a pretty asian blue & white bowl

In this painting I have the petals and leaves
full of movement with changes in direction.
I specifically chose this cobalt vase for
the arrangement as gold and cobalt are
complementary colors with
one being warm and one cool.
The warm gold adds energy while
the cobalt creates the calm.

On one of my day trips I was
inside this old barn to spend time with
the wooly friends that I so much enjoy.
This sheep comes bounding-along with
its playful sense of adventure and
jumps up onto this bale of hay.
It then looked at me as if to say
I'm King of The Bale.

It was a delightful day at the farm.
Natural sunlight was beaming into the barn
and bringing with it a beautiful warm glow.
The sunlight interacted differently with the
soft wooly sheep, bristly bale of hay,
old stone foundation, and
the weathered barn siding walls.
The lighting itself was so pretty
that it became one of my goals
to emphasize in this painting.

Peonies from my garden with their
wonderful big blossoms
bring fresh life to this vintage sugar bowl.

The mirror like silver finish of the sugar jar
reflects both the image of the peony bud
resting in the foreground,
the dainty lid of the sugar bowl, and
the cloth. The lid and the sugar bowl also reflect
the colors and glints of light from the setting.

The background, complementary and soft,
provides focus to each of
the elements within the painting.

Be sure to enjoy all the detail that I've included
in the sugar jar, it's lid, the peony bud,
and the peony blossoms & leaves.

Artist Appreciation Month

August is Artist Appreciation Month at Patience Brewster!

I was recently invited by Patience Brewster to write about “an artist” that inspired me in my work. Patience Brewster is a company focused on art and producing handmade ornaments. Visit the ornament page and enjoy the delightfully whimsical ornaments.
https://www.patiencebrewster.com/ornaments.html  A friend of mine gave me a Patience Brewster Purse Poodle when we had our beloved standard poodle.

As I contemplated the question and what to write I was having a very hard time picking “just one” artist. So I decided to write more about my first inspirations, the broadening, and the here and now inspirations.

From the time that I was able to hold a pencil I have been inspired by art in my parent's home that was painted by relatives from the early 1900's. I heard stories about Great Great Aunt Abbie and my father's Great Grandmother. My mother still has multiple paintings, pastels, watercolors, and hand painted porcelain pieces. Many of these beautiful paintings were done in the style of the traditional artists of the day, such as the Hudson River School. http://www.hudsonriverschool.org
The beauty of nature and natural light has always inspired me.

George Inness

In college I studied Art History and my view of the art world broadened to many different artists and styles. I learned to appreciate a wide variety of artists but have always gone back to the more traditional painterly styles. Some of my favorite artists are, John Singer Sargent, George Inness, William Merritt Chase, among many many others. You see how hard it is to pick “just one!”

 John Singer Sargent
     William Merritt Chase

Belonging to a local artist group is also very inspirational. Many of my artist friends have inspired me to improve my own work, try new methods, tools, and techniques. http://www.akronsocietyofartists.com/members.php There are really too many to mention!

There are many who think that traditional paintings are “old school” and that one should
paint things that are current events or somehow make a political statement. That might be fine for some but I prefer to think of what is positive and beautiful to me. Perhaps others will be inspired and see the positive and beauty for themselves in what I choose to paint.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Philippians 4:8

I selected these flowers from my garden
                                                          specifically for this painting
because together they are the perfect
complimentary colors with
an added a splash of grays and
whites to calm the setting.

A mixed bouquet from my garden.
When everything is in bloom
it is easy to make stunning bouquets
and dramatic paintings.

As I was arranging these
freshly clipped peonies from
my garden, they reminded me of
a small family...Momma, Daddy,
and a baby 'bud'

Always amazing to me is that my
light pink ones have
very little fragrance...
But the darker pink ones
sure make up for it.
The darker peony blooms smell
much better than any rose
that I've smelled to date.

Peonies, fragrant or not,
are a delight to paint !
