Sewing Hydrangeas

Sewing Hydrangeas
5"x7' original oil

A vintage sewing basket and blue hydrangeas
makes for an inspiring subject to paint.
I tried to stay loose and painterly.

Under the Apple Tree

Under the Apple Tree
8"x10" original oil
gallery wrap canvas

Sold

A very soft glowing light for this
blossoming apple tree. One of my
favorite memories as a child was playing at
my grandparents house in the apple tree.
Can't remember having a swing in that tree,
but this swing looks inviting.

On the Edge, Sparrow

On the Edge, Sparrow
4"x6" oil on gallery wrap canvas
framing optional

Sold

They're back! Our sparrow family is working
diligently to stuff the bird house to the brim.
Last year they had three broods of about 4 eggs
each. That's 12 babies! There is no way to tell if
they are the same couple, but regardless, they
are very hard workers just like last year.
The house is on the front of the garage and the birds
tolerate us walking by with the dog and going about
our daily comings and goings. I can stand on my tip
toes and look in.

Maybe a couple of paintings coming.
Hope you can enjoy
the couple as much as we do.

Lily of the Valley in Pewter

Lily of the Valley in Pewter
5"x7" original oil on canvas board

Sold

First time I've painted the tea caddy without
it's lid. It's lidless state created a new set of
difficulties with a reverse of the fluting and
shadows. I still like this almost monochromatic
look of gray and whites.

Crocus In Cobalt

Crocus In Cobalt
4"x6" original oil on gallery wrap canvas

Sold

Just a few crocus came up this year.
This one was just right for one of my
cobalt bottles. Painted in 'alla prima'
style... all at once... was just enough time
to paint this little white gem before it
faded under the lights. A cool light gave
as close to the natural light as possible
using a bulb. I try to paint what I see and
try to see as much as possible. That may
sound weird, but most people don't
really see all that is there. One of the jobs as
an artist is to portray a vision of the colors,
reflections, values and lights. The shadow
cast through the jar was really that color.
Very Cool!

Barnyard Four, Sheep

Barnyard Four, Sheep
4"x6" original oil, gallery wrap canvas

Sold

These guys look like they could get into
lots of trouble without much effort.
I love painting the character of each face.

This piece is fairly monochromatic with just
a hint of color in the shadows and the lights.

Spring Perfume, Daffodil

Spring Perfume, Daffodil
5"x7" original oil painting
on canvas board

Sold

A few close up shots to show some details.
Taking advantage of a few early spring
blooms. It's still fairly cold in northern Ohio,
so blooms are hard to come by. Believe it or not,
snow is in the forecast.

I really like the way this piece came out.
Not only are the colors working, but it
also has atmosphere. What is atmosphere?
One of my teachers said it's important to
be able to walk around the subject you are
painting. Trying to make a 3 dimensional
object appear to have form on a 2 dimensional
surface. In a way, it's the art of illusion.
Anyway, I think this has a healthy degree of
atmosphere.
