Colorful Indulgence

Colorful Indulgence
6 1/2" x 8 1/2 " approx
soft pastel on Wallis sanded paper

Available

A soft pastel for a change.
This painting was done as a demo for
my art group. It was called Sunday Sampler...
see the blog dated Oct 31st.

A quick still life was set up with items a
friend brought from her home. We added
a few cookies that were part of the
refreshment table. An instant still life!

Natural north light was used from one of the
windows of our studio space. I was pretty well
finished when the light was fading. A few
extra color notes were made later.

Painting the highly reflective surface
of silver offers a lot of challenges.
I try to paint what I see and still have
movement and gesture while trying to
keep things simple. The round belly of
the creamer seemed to create a swirling
movement as the white cloth was reflected.
The creamer is doing a dance as opposed to
the cups stillness.

I am very pleased with the shimmery
effect this painting has. Painted from
life, I tried to paint what I saw.
That's what I always try to do... but
this painting seemed to paint itself.
Loads of small pieces of light, and
reflections seem to shimmer.

I've chosen a different approach to
creating this still life painting.
All three dominant subjects feature
blues and whites. Yet all three are in
varied positions, with one being a painting
within the painting.

Hope you enjoy this interesting approach.

Capers, Crackers, & Cheese

Capers, Crackers, & Cheese
5" x 7" original oil

Premium Canvas Board

Sold

I invite you to enjoy the lighting!

The light passes through this
wonderfully green bottle and carries
the green color into the shadow.
The light is absorbed into the
textured surface of the crackers,
yet the light reflects off the silver
of the cheese knife and its handle.
Light glints off the bottle and bottle top,
and light also gives shadows of depth
to the holes in the cheese.
Lots to see and enjoy in this
yummy still life painting.

Debra J. Sepos Paintings

There is so much to enjoy in this
early morning farm scene,
the warm light of the rising sun,
the fence along the neighboring woods,a pair of aged grain silo's up the hill in
the distance, the corner of the vintage barn
with stone foundation, and some
friendly chickens foraging on the hill.

As an artist one must be observant of
the way light reacts with a subject. In
the brilliant light of the rising sun the
light is almost blinding. It spreads it's
halo of a warm glow over the land
and everything it touches.

Antique Copper & Lavender

Antique Copper & Lavender
5" x 7" original oil painting

Sold

A wonderful friend of mine loaned
me some items to paint. This antique
copper coffee pot is just a delight.
It not only has an old glow of
copper, but it has a few dings and
dents, and it sits a little bit off
balance, making a more interesting
painting with lots of character.

I love how the shadow was bigger
than life also. The copper color was
bouncing all around.

As an artists it's always exciting
to have new things to paint.
How exciting is this reflective surface.

The Sunday Sampler turned out great.
Many new people made their way to
the Akron Society of Artists studio space.
The weather was cooperative which
helped, I'm sure. There is another event
in December... wonder if the weather
will cooperate.
